Seminar on Alternatives in Agriculture:
Realizing New Possibilities
(PLS 190 – IAD 290, for undergraduates and graduate students, respectively)
Tuesdays 4:10 to 6:00, 101 Bowley
How does society envision a sustainable agriculture and what can society do to
realize that vision? That question will be explored from several perspectives by
a wide range of practitioners, researchers and educators from several disciplines
and organizations. Broad topics will include the use and management of natural
resources, the roles of public and private institutions in shaping agriculture
and food systems and the impacts consumers and the market can have in shaping agricutlure.
Specific topics will include:
- Public Lands: Management, Planning, Public Participation for Multiple Uses
- Rewarding Farmers for Providing Ecosystem Services
- Genetic Resources, Their Utilization and Control
- Do Transgenic Crops Have a Role in Sustainable Agriculture: Several Perspectives
- Innovative Production and Marketing Practices to Benefit Producers and Consumers
- Promoting “Sustainable” Practices through Labeling and Certification
- Traditional and Innovative Methods of Agricultural “Extension” and Information Sharing
